Adult Stage

Adult Stage

The adult stage is the sexually mature phase of a parasite’s life cycle in which procreation occurs. In helminths, this stage typically produces eggs or larvae that continue the cycle.

Adult parasites are often found in the definitive host (the host where sexual reproduction occurs). Depending on the parasite, adults may live in the intestine, blood vessels, tissues, or other organ systems.

Why it matters: Adult-stage location and reproductive output strongly influence disease patterns and diagnostic detection (e.g., eggs in stool/urine).
